about

The following three songs are in some way based on the anime series Clannad.

“The World That Has Ended”, title-wise, is a reference to the aforementioned series. I wrote the actual song (part one that is) back in 2010 for a soundtrack to a video game I was making (and dropped not long after as the story became ridiculous) and also it should be noted that although the game was dropped I did write a lot of songs for it (including from this project: “The Creation”, “Pure Emptyness”, “Discovery”, and “Who is the Dead One?”). This song, when I added much more to it in terms of atmosphere, really brought out the feelings of two things that are quite different yet share the same sort-of theme: a memory of something that happened to me back in January of 2012, as well as a scene from Clannad. I semi-woke up from a nightmare to a panic attack but mentally I couldn't tell if I was awake or asleep. I felt like I was going to die and at one point I remember accepting death if it was to come (it felt like the ceiling was going to collapse) but what made everything feel so much worse was that I was alone. How it connects to the series Clannad is that (WARNING: spoilers ahead!) whenever I saw Ushio alone in the cold dark world (which the song is named after) it reminded me of that event. In general the song encapsulates the horrible feeling of despair and loneliness, like that which the main character Tomoya felt when his wife Nagisa died while giving birth to Ushio (who later dies as well).

I don't really remember what exactly the Latin lyrics said but it was somewhere along the lines of being alone in a cold dead world but that there is someone, or something there with you so you don't ever want to leave it.

To put it simply, “The World That Has Ended” represents a nightmare. The chord at the end which goes up in pitch represents waking up.
