“Nos te Requiremus in Aeternum (Without Your Smile...)” was written in late 2011. I wrote this song after hearing about a friend losing her friend. I didn't know her, but hearing about her murder just affected me greatly the entire day. Her name was Cindi Santana and on September 30, 2011, she was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend at her school. However there was a personal connection to what happened because apparently he threatened to bomb the hospital she was being treated at, and at the exact same time at the exact same hospital my brother's newborn daughter was being kept in the NICU (luckily he was full of shit). As I listened to the news I picked up my violin and started playing the main melody. Suddenly, a rush of creativity came to me and I jumped onto my computer, opened up Sibelius 6 and just started writing. The middle line (the one in a triplet feel) was actually written back in June of 2011 but I had nowhere to use it until I wrote this song. The overall feeling of the song is ethereal, a tinge of happiness but with the reverse side being total sadness (I think the key of D major/B minor works well for that feeling). A friend of mine said the last chord progression scared him because it was so unexpected.
And so, this song is dedicated in memory of Cindi Santana.
