The second Thaumiel album, and the first in the Ethereal quadrology, finally in non-ear-shattering sound. I've wanted to remaster this album... essentially since about when I first released it. I wanted to release it as soon as possible, which was not a great idea because leading up to midnight of release day, I still had multiple things to do, not only in terms of mixing, but of the construction of the some of the songs! I was so impatient and had also not yet learned the important rule of mixing: start with cutting, not raising. The mix was unbearably loud, for what is supposed to be an "ambient" album mind you.
But still, this has always been a very special album for me, and I tried over the years to figure out how to remaster it. Many problems arose due to loss of many plugins, or some simply not working. The music box VST for the title track simply refused to work properly, so I purchased my own music box mechanism. I wasn't able to record the melody in the same key, but was able to sample its notes and get decent-sounding samples. Some recordings were changed, the sound of cicadas in track 5 was replaced with a recording I took myself in Arkansas this summer, as well as the chant in track 6. However, I wanted to keep some original recordings, even if they were... less than perfect, but I feel I was able to blend the original guitar recordings of the final track well with recordings from the Anabiosis version, as well as new ones.
The album art has also changed, and there is some symbolism behind the change. The original image had our avocado tree, which at the time was quite healthy. The new art is the same tree in its current state. This album is a snapshot of where I was at in late 2012, and while my current self wants this album to sound better, I suppose some of the original spirit has gone - πάντα ῥεῖ. Nonetheless, may listening to this album be a far more enjoyable experience.
The song "Nos te requiremus in aeternum (Without Your Smile...)" is dedicated in memory of Cindi Santana.
Both the song and album "Scarlet Ethereal" are dedicated in memory of my uncle, David Maldonado.
