And now the story behind the title track. I always planned to have a shoegazing end to the song. The song was halfway done around late November/early December and all that was left was a shoegazing section, since I was listening to a lot of Alcest and Agalloch at the time. On my soundcloud I still have the original idea of just playing the intro but in that style (at the time the song was in the key of A major/F# minor, now it's in Db major/Bb minor). However, on the night of December 1, 2012, something horrible happened. I got home from hanging out with friends at about 8 or so that night and I was just working on this song. I answered about three calls asking if my uncle David was okay, and one asked if it was true that he had a heart attack. I called my dad and he said that my uncle was in the hospital but as time passed I grew worried. I called again a little later and my dad told me in a morose tone that David, his brother, had died. As soon as I hung up, shocked at what I had just heard, I slowly walked back to my room. When I got back, I just picked up my guitar and the very very first thing that I played, without any sort of thought really, it was a pure stream of consciousness, was the clean line that is now on “Scarlet Ethereal”. I posted the song not long ago that had an alternate mix to it on EMG and a member asked why it sounded shaky and out of rhythm at times. The reason why is because I recorded it pretty much when it came to me, so I was full of sadness and one can hear it in my playing.
This song and album is dedicated in memory of David Maldonado.
